A few leak plugs, some unnecessary allocation prevention, null pointer deref fixes and general robustness fixes. I'm sure there is more to do here, I got tired... Fixes #3308

You can also generate this documentation locally by installing doxygen and graphviz dot, then running "make docs" in the source tree. The documentation will be in the docs/html directory.
