  I left in because they're commented out and it wasn't immediately obvious to
  me why they were commented out. Hopefully someone remembers why? Refs #10024.

I screwed up the logic here and didn't realize it earlier. next.minor

  compatibility with really old GTK+ (some for pre 2.6.0, some for pre 2.4.0).

That was supposed to be glib 2.12.0, not 2.14.0. next.minor
